Bishkek, Dec. 6, 2017 / Kabar /. Polluted air neutralizes the positive effect that can be obtained from walking. This conclusion was reached by experts from the Imperial College of London. The results of the work were published in the journal Lancet.

119 people over 60 years of age took part in research: 40 of them were healthy, 40 suffered from obstructive pulmonary disease, the remaining 39 – had ischemic heart disease.

One part of the people had to walk along Hyde Park, the other - along the lively Oxford Street. After a while (three to eight weeks), they changed. After each walk, scientists measured the concentration of pollutants in both places and health indicators among the participants of the research.

After walking along Hyde Park, the vital capacity of lungs and arterial stiffness significantly increased in healthy people (an indicator related to the development of cardiovascular diseases). After the same walk on Oxford Street, the first of these indicators almost did not grow, and the second fell, RIA Novosti reported.

The vital capacity of the lungs increased slightly in both cases, while the remaining markers worsened after walking along a busy street in people with obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary heart disease

Arterial stiffness have increased in people who have heart problems.

The authors of the study emphasize the fact that although the research involved older people, its results extend to younger people too. Thus, they urged people to avoid polluted areas at any physical activity.

"Our research shows that not only people with chronic cardio-pulmonary diseases, but healthy people as well should minimize walking on streets with a high level of air pollution. There is no benefit from walking even for healthy people at heavily polluted areas.
