Kyrgyzstan to host major forum dedicated to snow leopard protection

Bishkek, Jan.31, 2025./Kabar/. Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Edil Baisalov met with Director of Science of the International Snow Leopard Trust Dr. Koustubh Sharma and representatives of the Secretariat of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP).

The meeting took place in preparation for the 9th meeting of the Management Committee of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program, which will be held on June 5-6, 2025 on the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake. The event will be attended by representatives of 12 countries of the snow leopard range, international organizations, donor agencies, as well as leading experts in the field of nature conservation, climatology and sustainable development.

During the talks, Edil Baisalov emphasized the key role of the upcoming meeting in the conservation of the snow leopard and its ecosystems, and noted the importance of international cooperation in this area. He expressed gratitude to the Snow Leopard Trust for its support, which allowed Kyrgyzstan to conduct research on the population of this rare predator. To date, Kyrgyzstan is recognized as the country with the highest density of snow leopard habitat.

The sides discussed the main issues on the agenda of the upcoming meeting, including the development of green economy, transboundary cooperation, combating illegal wildlife trade and ecotourism development. Special attention will be paid to climate sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
