Bishkek, Jan. 31, 2025. /Kabar/. UNICEF Representative to the Kyrgyz Republic Samman Jung Thapa made a statement concerning Kyrgyzstan’s introduction of 550 new social workers.
“UNICEF warmly welcomes the recent decree signed by President Sadyr Zhaparov to introduce 550 new social worker positions dedicated to supporting children in difficult life situations. This significant step reflects a strong commitment to the well-being and protection of children across Kyrgyzstan.
The creation of these new positions will greatly enhance the capacity of Kyrgyzstan’s child protection system to respond to cases of abuse, violence, and neglect and support children affected by migration, children with disabilities and repatriated children, ensuring that every child receives the care and protection they deserve. This is the next step contributing to implementing Kyrgyzstan's recent commitment to ban corporal punishment in all settings, as announced at the Global Ministerial Conference on violence against children in Bogota. The child protection social workers can explain the new law and teach positive discipline techniques to parents. By providing comprehensive support and creating safe environments, these child protection social workers will play a crucial role in fostering the healthy development of children.
UNICEF stands ready to support the Government of Kyrgyzstan in the recruitment and training of these child protection social workers, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the needs of vulnerable children. We believe that this initiative will contribute to building a robust system of child protection and social support, ultimately leading to a brighter future for all children in Kyrgyzstan,” the statement said.
We commend the Government of Kyrgyzstan for prioritizing the rights and well-being of children and look forward to continued collaboration to ensure that every child can grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
