Bishkek, Aug. 24, 2026 /Kabar/. Twenty-four newly sworn-in Peace Corps Volunteers have begun their two-year service supporting English-language education in secondary schools and universities across Chui, Naryn, Issyk-Kul, Talas, Osh, and Jalal-Abad oblasts.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Lesslie Viguerie, representatives of the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Innovation, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as former Volunteers, local teachers, and directors of educational institutions where the Volunteers will serve as co-teachers.
“For the past 33 years, Peace Corps Volunteers and their communities have collaborated to increase student and teacher capacity in English and have built relationships that continue long beyond the two years of a Volunteer's service. These relationships promote friendship and mutual understanding between the people of the Kyrgyz Republic and the United States.,” said Ambassador Viguerie.
Working side-by-side with local English teachers, Volunteers introduce new teaching methods, enhance classroom instruction, and help motivate students to strengthen their English-language proficiency. Beyond formal lessons, Volunteers and their Kyrgyzstani counterparts lead English clubs and other after-school activities that support language practice for students and community members.
The newly assigned Volunteers have completed 11 weeks of Kyrgyz language, technical, and cultural training to prepare for their service.
Since 1993, the Peace Corps has provided nearly 1,400 Volunteer experts to support locally prioritized projects across every oblast of the Kyrgyz Republic. Volunteers serve at the invitation of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic. They live and work side by side with community members at the local level to build relationships, share cultures and knowledge, and contribute to education efforts throughout the country.
