Bishkek, Feb. 6, 2026. /Kabar/. Presently, 33 small hydropower plants across the republic are supplying electricity to the grid, Minister of Energy Taalaibek Ibraev informs.

According to him, 80 megawatt small HPPs are expected to be commissioned this year.

“If we take electricity consumption since 2021, it has increased from 15 billion kWh to 20 billion kWh. Of course, this is a difficult issue for the energy sector. On the other hand, what makes us happy is that our country's economy is developing. Electricity is being used additionally in sectors such as newly built kindergartens, schools, and factories.

We have given technical conditions for a total of around 1,900 kW or 1.9 gigawatts in 2025. If the Toktogul HPP is producing 1,440 MW of electricity after the modernization, we are using more electricity than that. At that time, it was necessary to gradually increase generation. As is known, in 2010, the 120-megawatt Kambarata-1 HPP was built, and no HPPs have been built since then,” Ibraev said.

In addition, he added that a 100-megawatt solar power plant was commissioned and is currently generating electricity.
