Bishkek, Oct. 28, 2026 /Kabar/. A delegation from Kyrgyzstan, led by the President’s Special Representative for the Mountain Agenda, Dinara Kemelova, is participating in the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in Yerevan. The event has brought together representatives from 196 countries, with an expected attendance of 15,000 people, according to the presidential press service.
On October 26, as part of COP17, events dedicated to "Mountain Ecosystems Day" were held. Organized by UNEP, the FAO, and the Mountain Partnership, these sessions brought together representatives from mountainous nations, international organizations, and the scientific community to discuss the conservation of mountain biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, and the mobilization of funding.
Speaking at the closing session, Dinara Kemelova emphasized the need to move from international commitments to concrete, practical measures for preserving mountain ecosystems. She also highlighted various mountain-related initiatives and extended an invitation to participate in the Second Global Mountain Summit, "Bishkek+25," which is scheduled to take place in Kyrgyzstan from October 21–23, 2027.

Special attention was given to international initiatives previously proposed by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic during the COP17 leaders' summit. These include the creation of a dedicated mountain program within the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the establishment of a Global Center for Mountain Sustainability in Bishkek, and the creation of a UN-backed trust fund for the preservation of Issyk-Kul lake.
The Kyrgyz delegation is also participating in various high-level events. In particular, at the event "From Global Review to Global Action: Launch of the Yerevan Biodiversity Monitoring Technology Center," Kyrgyzstan highlighted the unique role of mountain ecosystems and the need to mobilize resources for monitoring and research taking into account the complex geographical conditions of mountainous countries and their vulnerability to climate change.
During COP17, Dinara Kemelova also held bilateral discussions with representatives from Spain, Andorra, Greece, Panama, Poland, Norway, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Saudi Arabia. These conversations focused on cooperation in the conservation of mountain ecosystems, the advancement of the "mountain agenda," and participation in the "Bishkek+25" Summit.
