Bishkek, June 30, 2026. /Kabar/. Drivers who cause a drunk driving accident resulting in body harm face a prison sentence of 5 to 8 years. Baikazy Aitikul uulu, a lawyer from Ministry of Internal Affairs told Kabar.
According to him, additional penalties for such offenders include ban on driving for a period of 6 to 9 years, as well as dismissal from their current position.
Even harsher penalties are envisaged for cases resulting in fatalities.
"If accident caused by a drunk driver results in death, the prison term will be 8 to 10 years. Driver's licenses will also be revoked for 9 to 12 years, as well as the right to hold certain positions," explained Baikazy Aitikul uulu.
Previously, in the event of a traffic accident, drunk driver could avoid liability if they fully compensated for the damage caused and reached a settlement with the injured party.
According to the new legislation, reconciliation is no longer grounds for exemption from criminal liability. Even if the damage is fully compensated, the perpetrator will be punished. Moreover, any mitigating circumstances or probation supervision may no longer be applied to them.
