Event marking Day of Older Persons held in Bishkek

Bishkek, Oct. 1, 2026 /Kabar/. A festive event marking the International Day of Older Persons is taking place in Bishkek. Cultural and wellness programs have been organized for members of the older generation as part of the event.

This initiative is being conducted by the Social Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic as part of a month-long campaign dedicated to showing attention and care for the older generation. Elderly citizens from all districts of the capital are participating in the event. At the opening of the celebration, Gulnur Zhumataeva, Deputy Chairperson of the Social Fund, announced that efforts to support the older generation are being organized in a new format this year, with a special emphasis on creating conditions for active longevity.

"The Social Fund is shifting to a new format aimed at encouraging active longevity. Today’s events are taking place in the cities of Bishkek, Osh, and Karakol. They include sessions on Tai Chi, a form of Chinese exercise.

In China, retirees practice Tai Chi in parks in the mornings and lead active lifestyles. Starting in the spring, the Social Fund plans to organize free Tai Chi classes in parks. This will help improve health and foster conditions for active longevity," she said.

According to her, various programs for the older generation will be organized every Sunday in October. Partners—including healthcare professionals, the State Insurance Organization, and retail chains—will participate by conducting quick health screenings, distributing gifts, and presenting cultural programs.

Zhumataeva also noted that the Social Fund plans to establish recreation and social centers for retirees in Bishkek and other major cities. These venues could host free cultural programs, chess tournaments, and other social gatherings.

Furthermore, this year, Social Fund leadership will personally visit retirees over the age of 100 at their homes to offer congratulations and present them with gifts and monetary awards.

"Members of our older generation are our respected citizens and wise mentors. We wish you a happy International Day of Older Persons. We wish you good health, active longevity, and many joyful moments in life," said Gulnur Zhumataeva. The festive program continues with a Tai Chi workshop, followed by a concert and health check-ups.
