Bishkek, July 27, 2026 /Kabar/. "Green" development and environmental cooperation should be key areas within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), stated Talat Shabbir, Director of the China-Pakistan Research Center at the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad.
According to him, climate change and environmental destruction are among the most serious global challenges today. Despite Pakistan's contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions being less than 1%, the country is among the most vulnerable to climate threats.
Citing the 2022 floods, heat waves, and melting glaciers as examples, he noted that these events have a serious impact on the economy, food security, and infrastructure.
Talat Shabbir emphasized the need to implement the following steps within the SCO:
- development of renewable energy,
- green financing,
- creation of sustainable infrastructure,
- strengthening joint measures to combat climate risks.
He also praised China's experience in green technologies, clean energy, and sustainable development, noting that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor plays a significant role in ensuring environmental sustainability.
The speaker noted that the SCO countries possess enormous potential in terms of population, energy resources, and economies. These capabilities must be combined to address global challenges.
He also added that scientific institutions, media, and think tanks should play an active role in raising public awareness and developing sound policies.
In conclusion, Talat Shabbir called on SCO countries to intensify cooperation in green technologies, environmental management, and scientific innovation, emphasizing that these efforts will contribute to sustainable development, regional stability, and shared prosperity.
