Bishkek, Aug. 10, 2026 /Kabar/. On August 10, 2026, Karakol International Airport conducted its first maintenance flight following the completion of a major runway reconstruction. For the first time in its history, the airport received a long-haul aircraft – an Airbus A320.
The maintenance flight marked an important step in preparing the airport for the launch of scheduled international flights and confirmed the readiness of the updated airfield infrastructure to handle larger aircraft.
Reconstruction resulted lengthened runway at Karakol International Airport from 2,450 to 3,750 meters, including instalaltion of modern lighting equipment and an instrument landing system (ILS), significantly expanding the airport's operational capabilities and improving flight safety.
While the airfield's capabilities were previously focused primarily on regional aircraft such as the Dash 8 Q400, as well as business jets and other aircraft of similar specifications, following the reconstruction, the airport's infrastructure can handle significantly larger aircraft types, including the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 family aircraft. The ability to handle other types of wide-body aircraft is determined by their specific operational characteristics and the requirements for the airfield infrastructure.
