Bishkek, Oct. 16, 2026 /Kabar/. As domestic potato production in Kyrgyzstan fully meets the population's annual demand, a temporary restriction on potato imports has been introduced, effective until March 1, 2027.
According to the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, the relevant resolution was signed by the First Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Daniyar Amangeldiev.
"The restriction does not apply to potatoes in transit through the territory of Kyrgyzstan, nor to potatoes imported for scientific research, testing, or other special purposes," the statement says.
It is noted that Kyrgyzstan’s annual domestic demand for potatoes is approximately 779,700 tons. Currently, the country’s self-sufficiency rate for potatoes stands at 181.9%.
In 2026, potato production in the country is projected to reach approximately 1,249,700 tons.
