Bishkek, Oct. 3, 2026 /Kabar/. The 10th World Forest Week and the 28th Session on Forests took place in Rome from September 28 to October 2. During these events, the Kyrgyz delegation, led by Dinara Kemelova—the President's Special Representative for the Mountain Agenda—promoted an initiative to declare a UN Decade for Strengthening the Resilience of Mountain Regions (2028–2037).
According to the Presidential Administration, Kyrgyzstan's initiative garnered support from a number of countries; in its report, the Committee acknowledged the critical importance of mountain ecosystems for water resources, food security, and livelihoods, while also noting the particular vulnerability of mountain regions to natural disasters. Dinara Kemelova also delivered a keynote address at the high-level FAO thematic event "Mountain Forests: Solutions for People and Prosperity." She provided updates on the implementation of the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions (2023–2027), the upcoming Second Global Mountain Summit "Bishkek+25" scheduled for October 2027, and efforts to elevate the profile of mountain issues on the global agenda.
During a meeting with Maria Verrone, Advisor on Central Asia to the President of the Council of Ministers of Italy, Dinara Kemelova conveyed a message from Sadyr Japarov to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The message proposed strengthening cooperation to advance the mountain agenda and included an invitation to participate in the "Bishkek+25" summit.
Additionally, during her visit, Dinara Kemelova held bilateral meetings with FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, IFAD Vice-President Jyratdin Mukeshimana, WFP Deputy Executive Director Matthew Hollingworth, and representatives of the Italian Foreign Ministry. Discussions focused on preparations for the "Bishkek+25" summit, the establishment of a global center for mountain region resilience, and the promotion of bilateral and regional projects for sustainable mountain development.
International partners expressed support for Kyrgyzstan’s efforts to advance the mountain agenda globally and affirmed their commitment to promoting projects that support mountain communities and farmers, as well as initiatives to build the capacity of developing countries to address the impacts of climate change.
