Bishkek, Aug. 3, 2026 /Kabar/. As part of the agreements reached on demarcating the state border between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, organizational and technical measures related to the exchange of land plots have begun.
According to the press service of Batken region governor, the regular meeting of the joint working commission of the two countries on the implementation of the land exchange took place on July 24 in Kadamjay district.
During the meeting, the meeting discussed organizational and technical issues, including determining the civil status of residents of the transferred territories, their registration, resettlement, as well as the settlement of property, economic, and other matters.
To implement the decisions made at the meeting and promptly resolve organizational issues, a joint working group of the two countries began work on August 3, 2026, at the local level. Representatives of the group are conducting outreach to the population.
The working group is led by Baktybek Toksonbaev, First deputy governor of Batken region, and Bekhzod Saifullaev, Deputy head of the department of migration and personalization of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan.
It is noted that during the demarcation of the state border, the villages of Chong-Gara and Tash-Tobo, previously part of Uzbekistan's Fergana Region, were transferred to Kyrgyzstan. These villages are predominantly populated by ethnic Kyrgyz.
According to preliminary data, approximately 2,500 people live in the two villages.
Registration procedures are currently underway in the villages. The next stage will involve implementing the procedures stipulated by law for granting Kyrgyz citizenship to residents.
According to the agreements between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, in exchange for the transferred villages, the Kyrgyz side will transfer an equivalent plot of land near the state border to Uzbekistan.
