World Bank to finance improvement of irrigation system in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, May 18, 2026 /Kabar/. Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic – Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry Erlist Akunbekov held talks with representatives of the World Bank and the International Development Association on attracting investment in the water sector.

The meeting was held to implement priority areas of state policy in water resources management in Kyrgyzstan.

During the talks, the National Irrigation Investment Program project, which is expected to attract $193 million in funding, was discussed.

It should be noted that this project is aimed at modernizing irrigation infrastructure, improving water resource management, and ensuring food security.

Furthermore, the preparation of design and estimate documentation for the Omuko irrigation canal in At-Bashy district of Naryn region, as well as the Great Talas Canal in Bakai-Ata and Aitmatov districts of Talas region, were discussed. Grant funding in the amount of $650,000 will be allocated for these purposes.

Following the talks, Erlist Akunbekov and World Bank representatives signed the relevant protocols.
