Moscow is hosting a meeting of the Committee of Security Council Secretaries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). The Belarusian delegation, led by State Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich, is taking part in the event, BelTA has learned.
The security council secretaries of the member states are discussing the situation within the CSTO’s area of responsibility and measures aimed at neutralizing challenges and threats to collective security. Several documents are expected to be signed to further develop cooperation in combating terrorism and the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs.
Opening the closed-door session, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu stated that the level of security in the world has severely deteriorated. “The situation is particularly tense along the CSTO’s western borders. The main threat comes from the NATO bloc and the countries of so-called civilized Europe that belong to it,” he said. “In its 2025 report, the NATO secretary general proudly announced an increase in military spending by all member states, with the total exceeding $1.5 trillion. The leaders in this regard are not the wealthiest nations but the countries of Eastern Europe and the Baltics, which are spending around 4% of their national GDP on so-called defense. At the same time, open calls are being heard from the Baltic states to attack Kaliningrad Oblast. This, apparently, is a demonstration of their commitment to peaceful coexistence with their neighbors.”
“The exercises of the nuclear forces that took place last week will moderate the fervor of Western strategists and force them to take a sober look at the possible consequences of their domestic policies towards Russia and its allies,” Sergei Shoigu said.
“There are many problems, and it is far more effective to solve them together,” Sergei Shoigu added.
On 27-28 May, a delegation from the State Secretariat of the Security Council of Belarus will take part in the First International Security Forum and the 14th International Meeting of High-Ranking Officials Responsible for Security Affairs. Aleksandr Volfovich is expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings with his foreign counterparts on the sidelines of the events.
