Bishkek, July 30, 2026 /Kabar/. Over the past 70–90 years, the total area of glaciers in the Issyk-Kul basin has decreased by 33.7%, and over 7–10 years by 23.1%. Kyrgyzhydromet service reports.
As noted, these data became known when updating the catalog of the region. The service identified them when comparing them with previous ones.
The new catalog has created a unified inventory of glaciers, including their clarified boundaries, morphometric indicators and updated attribute data.
It was prepared using satellite images of the Copernicus program Sentinel-2, the QGIS geoinformation system, and the Google Earth platform. The research results clarified the boundaries of glaciers, identified glaciers that had broken off, newly formed, and completely disappeared.
The updated catalog is an important resource for monitoring the country's cryosphere and will provide government agencies, scientific institutions, design and engineering organizations with reliable information about the current state of glaciers.
