Bishkek, March 19, 2026. /Kabar/. Kyrgyzstan plans to launch a project to create a national carbon unit accounting and circulation system in the near future. Ministry of Energy informs.

According to the ministry, the project's implementation was discussed by Deputy Minister of Energy Altynbek Rysbekov and World Bank experts led by Maksudjon Safarov.

The project is being implemented as part of the iFIRST initiative and will be one of the first in the country in the field of carbon finance. It aims to develop the energy sector and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Distinctive feature of the project is its pay-for-performance mechanism: funding will be allocated only after actual emission reductions are confirmed.

If successfully implemented, Kyrgyzstan could receive up to $4.5 million and attract an additional $5.5 million through carbon markets. Technical assistance of up to $1.5 million is also provided. The project is expected to strengthen climate policy, modernize the energy sector, and improve the country's environmental resilience.
