Bishkek, July 15, 2026. /Kabar/. Bishkek Mayor Aibek Dzhunushaliev held an off-site meeting today at the Old Bishkek underpass shopping mall.

According to him, the Ministry of Construction reported that the pedestrian underpass was technically open, but the facility has not yet been officially commissioned. Despite this, commercial businesses within the complex are operating without authorization.

"We are all working toward the development of the city. The municipality once supported the implementation of this project, subject to the modernization and renovation of the city's infrastructure. Unfortunately, today businesses are only fulfilling their obligations unilaterally," emphasized Mayor Aibek Dzhunushaliev.

Following an on-site meeting, the mayor ordered the sealing of retail facilities in underpass. Until the investor fully fulfills its obligations and the facility is officially commissioned, all commercial activities must be suspended.

According to the mayor's office, the underground pedestrian crossing remains open for free passage for residents and visitors to the capital. The restrictions apply only to retail premises.

During the on-site meeting, Aibek Dzhunushaliev also inspected the progress of demolition work at the intersection of Chui Avenue and Baitik Baatyr Street. He also inspected the progress of landscaping and the reconstruction of the fountain area.

"Following the inspection, the relevant city services have been instructed to expedite construction, installation, and landscaping work, ensuring its high-quality and timely completion," the statement says.

As a reminder, the Old Bishkek project is one of the key city infrastructure projects, with underground shopping complex having hundreds of retails outlets and parking space for 250 cars.
