WB: Kambarata-1 HPP to strengthen energy security of Central Asia

Bishkek, March 13, 2026. /Kabar/. Kambarata-1 HPP construction project is important in the energy sector of Kyrgyzstan and will strengthen confidence in the energy future and food security of all of Central Asia, WB head in Kyrgyzstan Hugh Riddell told during the meeting with the Minister of Energy Taalaibek Ibraev.

According to the department, at the meeting, Minister Taalaibek Ibraev reported that as a result of the modernization of the sector, last winter passed without accidents. He thanked the World Bank for its support and provided information on the modernization of equipment and tariff policy.

Hugh Riddell assessed the work of the ministry as "excellent" and noted that the Kambarata-1 HPP gives confidence in the country's energy future. He added that work on the intergovernmental agreement on the project is in full swing.

It was noted that additional discussions on the Kambarata-1 HPP project will continue at the spring meeting in Washington. This meeting will consider issues such as strengthening the technical, economic and environmental aspects of the project, as well as ensuring the successful implementation of the project with the support of the World Bank.

Ibraev noted the growing need for specialists in the energy sector and suggested paying special attention to training personnel and working together in the direction of "green" energy.

The parties also discussed the progress of joint projects, including technical assistance to the Kambarata-1 HPP, infrastructure modernization, and financing "green" energy.
