The Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO PA) has adopted more than 100 model laws over its 20 years of activity, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko told journalists following the meeting of the Council of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO PA Council) held in Moscow on 20 April, BelTA reports.

“Speaking about today’s meeting and the overall work of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, I should say that this body serves as a legal shield for the entire Collective Security Treaty Organization. In the 20 years since its founding – a milestone we are celebrating this year – more than 100 model laws and other documents have been adopted, and they are now being applied in practice,” said Igor Sergeyenko.

In particular, 17 model laws have been adopted concerning military security, defense, and the fight against terrorism, extremism, and drug trafficking. “New threats are emerging today. We see challenges in areas like information security and biological security,” he noted.

According to him, uniform approaches are also needed to protect critical infrastructure, including industrial facilities, communications, and transportation. “We need common approaches and coordinated solutions to fall back on when a difficult situation occurs,” Igor Sergeyenko clarified.

“When we talk about biological security, it is no secret that CSTO member states are concerned, among other things, about the appearance and operation of various biological laboratories near their borders. A reliable barrier must be established to prevent pathogens from entering the territories of our countries,” he stated.

In his address at the meeting, the chairman of the House of Representatives also spoke about the results of the combat readiness inspection held in Belarus. “Today I also heard from my colleagues that similar events, including those scheduled under the CSTO framework, are taking place across the organization’s member states, with armed forces representatives from various countries participating. That is absolutely necessary,” Igor Sergeyenko noted.

He emphasized that the military component is the foundation of the CSTO. “It is important to cooperate in the defense sector, to strengthen our unity and our coordination. And any coordination is impossible if you do not know your ally and partner,” Igor Sergeyenko concluded.
