The death toll from sudden flash floods triggered by torrential thunderstorms in Morocco’s Safi province rose to 21 as of Sunday, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.

Rescue teams saved 32 people and transferred them to the hospital for medical treatment. Most have since been discharged after receiving care, while several others remain under medical observation.

Public authorities, appropriate government departments, and emergency services continue their full-scale mobilization on the ground to search for any missing persons, secure affected areas, and provide support and assistance to affected residents.

The Safi provincial directorate of the Ministry of National Education announced the suspension of classes on Monday at all educational institutions under its jurisdiction due to adverse weather conditions, in line with the weather alert bulletin and following consultations with provincial authorities.

The directorate said the measure seeks to ensure the safety of students and teaching and administrative staff.

Officials said exceptionally heavy rainfall over about an hour caused rapid flooding that swept through homes, shops, and streets. The floods caused extensive damage, particularly in Safi’s historical old medina, where around 70 houses and commercial premises were inundated. Floodwaters also swept away about ten vehicles.
