On April 24, 2025, a meeting was held at the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry with the consul of the Turkish Embassy in the Kyrgyz Republic on the issue of the detention of a Kyrgyz citizen N.u.A.in Turkiye, who accompanied schoolchildren to the International Mathematical Olympiad.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, during the meeting a verbal note from the ministry was handed over with a request to provide official information on this incident, as well as to ensure urgent consular access to N.u.A. in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
"The Consulate General of Kyrgyzstan in Istanbul provided assistance in finding a lawyer and carried out an operational consular visit to hold a meeting with representatives of the competent authorities of Turkiye," the Foreign Ministry noted.
It is noted that the issue of the safe return of all Olympiad participants remains under control. "The first group of citizens has already returned to Kyrgyzstan, the rest are expected to fly out in the near future. Employees of the Consulate General maintain constant contact with citizens of Kyrgyzstan and close relatives of the detainee," the Foreign Ministry reported.
A Kyrgyz mathematics teacher has reportedly gone missing after being detained by Turkish authorities at İstanbul Airport.
The teacher at Hussain Karasev High School in Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kul region, traveled to Turkiye on April 20 with six students to attend an international math olympiad in Antalya.
