Bishkek, Oct. 28, 2025. /Kabar/. The Kyrgyz som is currently one of the most stable currencies in Central Asia, President Sadyr Zhaparov said during the opening ceremony of the new National Bank building in Bishkek on Tuesday.
In his remarks, the head of state noted that May 10, 1993, was a special day in our history, when the national currency, the som, was put into circulation. This event marked the beginning of the country's economic sovereignty. Since then, the som has been a source of pride for the Kyrgyz people.
He added that the stability of the som is one of the National Bank's main goals. This goal directly impacts the lives of every citizen and the well-being of every family.
Sadyr Zhaparov also emphasized that over the past decades, the National Bank has endured many trials – inflation, financial crises, pandemics, and global economic changes.
"However, in each of these periods, the institution demonstrated resilience and high professionalism.
Today, the som is one of the most stable currencies in Central Asia. The president emphasized the need to develop the economy in line with the demands of the times, strengthen the National Bank's modern activities, and implement innovations. In particular, the implementation of the digital som project will be a key step. This project will improve the security and speed of the payment system, and make financial services more convenient and accessible for citizens," the head of state stated.
