Bishkek, Aug. 11, 2026. /Kabar/. Work on modernizing the power grid and increasing the reliability of power supply in Kyrgyzstan continues within the framework of Electricity Sector Modernization and Sustainability Project (KEMS).
According to the Ministry of Energy, KEMS is being implemented with support of World Bank total project cost $58 million.
As part of it, 281 transformers have been installed in all regions of the country. Also, 10 power transformers with a voltage of 35 kV have been installed in the relevant substations.
It is planned to lay 100 kilometers of cables in the cities of Bishkek, Osh and Issyk-Kul region. As of July 8, 2026, 76.1 kilometers of it were installed, and the plan was implemented by 76 percent.
In addition, the electricity metering system is being digitized. 500,100 automated meters and 10,000 concentrators have been installed in all regions of the country. In 2026, it is planned to purchase another 390,000 smart meters.
The project also provides for the transition to digital management of electricity networks.
In particular, work is underway to introduce the SCADA system. It will allow for real-time monitoring and control of electricity network facilities.
The project entered into force on July 28, 2023 and will be implemented until the end of 2027. As of June 30, 2026, $32.7 million has been spent under the project.
