Kyrgyzstan and Hungary join efforts to preserve cultural heritage

Bishkek, Oct. 23, 2025. /Kabar/ – A roundtable discussion on the preservation of cultural heritage in Hungary and Kyrgyzstan was held in the “Budapest” conference hall at the Embassy of Hungary in Bishkek.

According to the Hungarian Embassy, the event brought together leading artisans, designers, and experts from both countries, serving as a platform for exchanging experience and strengthening cultural dialogue. The meeting was opened by Ambassador of Hungary to the Kyrgyz Republic, Sándor Dorogi.

Participants discussed the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Gabriella Idyarto, Executive Director of the Association of Hungarian Folk Artists, shared the Association’s experience in uniting 71 organizations and over 5,000 artisans. The Association’s model of transferring professional knowledge and skills has been included in UNESCO’s National Register of Best Practices for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Mihály Vetro, Academician of the Hungarian Academy of Arts and People’s Artist of Hungary, spoke about his experience studying traditional felt-making in various countries, including Kyrgyzstan, and how his school and students continue to preserve and develop ancient crafts.

Nurilya Barakanova, Manager of the Union of Designers of the Kyrgyz Republic and Executive Director of the Ustatshakirt Plus Public Foundation, presented the Foundation’s work in reviving Kyrgyz folk music and instruments, including the digitization of old melodies from the Golden Fund of Kyrgyz Radio. She also highlighted efforts to preserve felt-making traditions (such as shyrdaks and kiyiz) and promote Kyrgyz artisans on the international stage.

Sultan Raev, Secretary General of TURKSOY, noted that the organization remains committed to supporting traditional arts and crafts to preserve intangible cultural heritage.

The event became an important platform for experience exchange and strengthening cultural ties between Hungary and Kyrgyzstan in the field of safeguarding living heritage.
