Bishkek, July 21, 2026. /Kabar/. In his address to the nation, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov spoke about the situation in the energy sector and noted the need to ensure the country's energy independence.
The head of state emphasized that despite significant water resources, Kyrgyzstan has faced electricity shortages for many years and is forced to purchase electricity from neighboring countries.
"During the entire period of independence, only one unit, the Kambarata-2 hydroelectric power plant, has been commissioned in Kyrgyzstan. Situated at the source of the largest water resources, we are experiencing electricity shortages only because we have not built a single large hydroelectric power plant in all these years," Sadyr Zhaparov noted.
According to him, over the past five years, approximately 50 small and medium-sized hydroelectric power plants have been commissioned in the country, with approximately 50 more under construction.
The president noted that the electricity shortage has not yet been completely eliminated due to the constant growth in consumption—factories, social facilities, and housing are being built across the country.
"I am confident that we will be able to resolve the energy shortage. We are working consistently to achieve this goal," the head of state stated.
Sadyr Zhaparov also announced that the minister of energy will provide daily updates to the public on the situation in the energy sector.
