Bishkek, July 21, 2026. /Kabar/. Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov stated that the country's public debt now stands at 39% of gross domestic product (GDP), while before 2020, external debt reached approximately 120% of GDP. The head of state made this statement, commenting on public debt.
According to the president, the level of each country's external debt is assessed relative to its gross domestic product.
"While before 2020, Kyrgyzstan's external debt amounted to approximately 120% of GDP, today the total public debt is 39% of GDP. "I have tasked the Cabinet of Ministers with preventing this figure from exceeding 50% in the future," Sadyr Zhaparov noted.
The head of state emphasized that, unlike previous years, all borrowed funds are being used exclusively for the implementation of specific projects.
According to him, each loan is under 100% control, and projects financed by the loans must ultimately independently ensure the return of their investments.
The president also noted that there are many countries in the world where public debt already exceeds 100% of GDP, but he said Kyrgyzstan does not intend to follow that example.
