As part of an official visit to Malaysia, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov met with Chairman of the Senate (upper house) of Malaysia Awang Bemi Awang Ali Basah and Speaker of the House of Representatives (lower house) of the Malaysian Parliament Johari bin Abdul in Kuala Lumpur.
According to the presidential press service, after mutual greetings and a joint photo session, the head of state left an entry in the book of honorary guests of the Malaysian Parliament.
During the meeting, an exchange of views took place on current issues of cooperation, including the development of inter-parliamentary relations.
The chairman of the Senate briefly spoke about the legislative procedures in force in Malaysia.
In turn, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Malaysian Parliament Johari bin Abdul noted that the visit of the head of state Sadyr Zhaparov is an important step in strengthening friendship and cooperation between the countries. He also supported the idea of intensifying contacts at the inter-parliamentary level.
Chairman of the Senate of Malaysia Awang Bemi Awang Ali Basah expressed interest in developing a systemic dialogue between the countries, especially in the parliamentary sphere.
He also emphasized that there is no specially designed long-term cooperation program between the parliaments of the two countries and proposed to develop a new mechanism for interaction.
The chairman of the Senate noted that the Malaysian Parliament is ready to cooperate in exchanging experience between our legislative bodies, in the field of scientific and analytical work, as well as within the framework of political dialogue, especially in the context of a rapidly changing international environment.
In addition, Chairman of the Senate Awang Bemi Awang Ali Basah proposed working to increase the institutional capacity of the two parliaments, including in matters of digitalization, management of parliamentary databases, online broadcasts and electronic voting.
The chairman of the Senate highlighted education, tourism and agriculture among the priority areas. He expressed hope that this visit of the president of Kyrgyzstan will become a new impetus in the development of inter-parliamentary dialogue between the two countries and expressed readiness for systemic and constructive interaction. In turn, President Sadyr Zhaparov noted that today, during official negotiations with the Prime Minister, all key areas of political, economic and cultural cooperation were discussed. A number of important documents were signed. During the negotiations, special attention was also paid to the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation.
The head of state emphasized that the Kyrgyz side is interested in further developing traditional friendly relations with Malaysia based on full mutual understanding, trust and constructive cooperation.
He noted that inter-parliamentary cooperation opens up opportunities for deepening political dialogue, exchanging experience in the legislative sphere and mutual understanding on international issues.
The head of state emphasized that since ancient times, the Kyrgyz people have had a Kurultai - a people's assembly where the most important issues were decided. Thus, in accordance with the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan, an advisory body "People's Kurultai" was created, which ensures the direct participation of citizens in governing the country. The President noted with satisfaction that a parliamentary friendship group for cooperation with Malaysia had been created in the Kyrgyz Parliament, which demonstrates the interest of the two countries in strengthening ties at the parliamentary level. Given these foundations, Sadyr Japarov said that the time has come to form permanent, sustainable and trust-based cooperation between the parliaments of Kyrgyzstan and Malaysia.
Sadyr Japarov invited members of the Malaysian Parliament to participate as international observers in the next elections to the Zhogorku Kenesh in 2026.
The head of state expressed confidence that the results of this meeting will give new impetus to further strengthening the inter-parliamentary dialogue between Kyrgyzstan and Malaysia and, in general, cooperation.
At the end of the meeting, President Sadyr Zhaparov invited the Chairman of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to visit Kyrgyzstan.
