Bishkek, Sept. 23, 2026 /Kabar/. On September 22, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov met with Federal President of the Republic of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.
The parties discussed the current state of Kyrgyz-Austrian relations and prospects for their further development in the trade-economic, investment, and financial spheres, and also focused on continued cooperation within the framework of the UN Security Council.
President Sadyr Zhaparov noted the important role of the Kyrgyz-Austrian Intergovernmental Commission in promoting economic cooperation and expressed readiness to hold its next meeting in Bishkek next year.
He also emphasized Kyrgyzstan's interest in developing interbank cooperation, noting that establishing direct links between the banks of the two countries would create additional opportunities for expanding trade and investment.
In this regard, the president proposed considering the possibility of opening correspondent accounts between banks in Kyrgyzstan and Austria, as well as establishing a branch of an Austrian bank in Kyrgyzstan.
For his part, Alexander Van der Bellen noted the Austrian side's readiness to consider these proposals and stated that he would submit the proposal to the Austrian Ministry of Finance for review. Speaking of the shared interests of Kyrgyzstan and Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen highlighted the significance of mountains and mountain ecosystems for both countries. He emphasized the importance of joint efforts to combat climate change and preserve glaciers, which play a vital role in securing water resources.
