Bishkek, June 2, 2026 /Kabar/. Kyrgyz Ministry of Agriculture held talks with the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) on clean drinking water project for residents of Osh oblast.
The project is aimed at addressing one of the most pressing problems in the region. It will cover 32 villages in the Kara-Suu and Uzgen districts, where approximately 158,000 people are still forced to use either outdated water supply systems built between the 1950s and 1980s or unsafe water sources.
"Osh Oblast is one of the most densely populated regions of the country. However, access to quality drinking water remains limited here at approximately 65%. To address this issue, the Fund will provide a $60 million loan within the overall project budget of $66.7 million. Kyrgyzstan will provide co-financing of $6.7 million," the statement says.
The project includes large-scale infrastructure modernization: the construction and renovation of over 890 km of water supply and distribution networks, the drilling of 33 artesian wells, the construction of 54 reservoirs, and the installation of 11 pumping stations. All this will ensure residents have access to stable and safe drinking water.
The project also includes improved sanitation: 95 sanitary facilities in schools, kindergartens, and first aid stations will be renovated.
The project implementation unit under the department for drinking water supply and sanitation development of Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry has been appointed as the implementing agency.
The project is scheduled for five years from the date the agreement comes into force. The document is scheduled to be signed by the end of June 2026.
The project will be an important step toward improving the quality of life of the population and developing a modern water supply system in the region.
