Bishkek, Feb. 02, 2026. /Kabar/. French Member of the European Parliament Thierry Mariani sharply criticized the European Union's policy towards Kyrgyzstan, calling for taking into account the country's specifics and geopolitical situation. He recalled that Kyrgyzstan was the first in Central Asia to receive the status of "democratic partner" from the Council of Europe.

“I don’t understand why everyone is suddenly focused on Kyrgyzstan. Maybe because former President Almazbek Atambayev is in exile in Spain? Is that why this country is suddenly attracts special interest? I’m just asking a question. You probably remember that Kyrgyzstan was the first Central Asian country to receive the status of a “democratic partner” from the Council of Europe.

Of course, this is not an ideal country, but I think that if we look at the situation in the five Central Asian countries, the situation in this country is not so bad. There are elections in this country, observers can be sent. I repeat, if I’m not mistaken, President Sadyr Zhaparov received you and your delegation. I would like to ask you, how many other heads of state have received you to discuss similar issues? There are still some problems.”

Of course, there is no doubt that there is a need to move forward in the field of human rights. However, in my opinion, this country is moving at its own pace, strengthening its state institutions and shaping its national history in very difficult and unique conditions. It maintains relations with Russia. "Yes, if 2 million Kyrgyz are expelled from Russia, are we ready to accept them in Europe? I am asking this question. I am not against lecturing the whole world, but sometimes geopolitical realities must be taken into account.

I would like to note an important point: the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Zhaparov, such a popular leader that European leader would admire. He has effectively fought organized crime, which threatens the integrity of the state.

I think it is better to extend a helping hand to Kyrgyzstan now. You have fulfilled your mission. I think you are satisfied with the results. Let's raise specific issues and continue our engagement with Kyrgyzstan. I think that giving them a bad name can have a negative effect. In other words, you can push them into the arms of the very people you want to alienate them from," he said.
