Bishkek, March 5, 2026. /Kabar/. This regional conference is important because it brings together governments, international organizations, experts, and young people to discuss how education can contribute to peace and security. Biljana Milosevic, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Regional Delegation for Central Asia, told Kabar.
According to her, at a time when the world is facing a growing number of armed conflicts and heightened global tensions, such initiatives help raise awareness of the humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons and promote dialogue on disarmament and non-proliferation issues.
"Kyrgyzstan also plays a significant role in this area as a signatory to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, demonstrating its commitment to international efforts to advance disarmament and strengthen global security. Hosting this event also highlights Kyrgyzstan's leadership and the region's contribution to promoting peace through education and cooperation," she said.
Biljana Milosevic also noted that the ICRC works worldwide to raise awareness of international humanitarian law and the humanitarian consequences of the use of weapons, including nuclear weapons. "In cooperation with governments, armed forces, universities, and civil society organizations, we support educational and training initiatives aimed at promoting respect for humanitarian principles and the law of armed conflict." We also advocate for more effective implementation of international disarmament agreements and continue to call for the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons due to their catastrophic humanitarian consequences," she added.
It should be noted that a regional conference, "Education for Peace and Security," is taking place in Bishkek today, dedicated to the International Day of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic with the assistance of the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek and the International Committee of the Red Cross in Central Asia.
