Bishkek, July 1, 2026 /Kabar/. Karakol city to have large-scale project to finish. New wastewater treatment facility to be commissioned. Department for drinking water supply and sanitation development reports.

According to the department, construction and installation work is 90% complete to date. The new treatment facilities have design capacity of 12,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. The project's implementation will ensure the city's environmental safety and reduce the impact on the Issyk-Kul Lake biosphere reserve.

The modern multi-stage wastewater treatment system is compliant with international environmental standards. The mechanical stage includes an automated receiving chamber, coarse and fine screening systems, as well as aerated sand traps and grease traps designed to remove solid waste and grease contaminants.

Biological treatment is carried out using A2O technology in reinforced concrete aeration tanks using activated sludge. This method includes anaerobic, anoxic, and aerobic zones, ensuring the effective removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus from wastewater.

All key processes at the facility are automated and integrated into an international digital SCADA control system. This system will monitor equipment operation, including air blowers and the distribution of wastewater into secondary radial settling tanks.

The final stage of treatment will involve disinfecting the water using sodium hypochlorite at a modern pumping and filtration facility before discharge.

The department emphasized that the commissioning of the facility will be an important step in developing Karakol's public infrastructure and preserving the region's ecological balance.
