Kyrgyz citizen dies in Malta after being swept out to sea

Bishkek, Jan. 12, 2026. /Kabar/. A Kyrgyz citizen has died in Malta after being swept out to sea by a wave.

According to the reports, the incident occurred on January 11, 2026, in St. George’s Bay. Two women from Kyrgyzstan were swept into the sea by a strong wave. As a result, a 48-year-old woman died, while the 23-year-old woman was hospitalized. Maltese authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

“After receiving official information from the Maltese side about the death of a Kyrgyz citizen, the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Italian Republic immediately established cooperation with the competent authorities of Malta to organize all necessary procedures related to the repatriation of the deceased’s body to the homeland, including with the assistance of compatriots residing in Malta,” Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry said in the statement.

The ministry noted that the embassy continues to work on repatriation issues, provides comprehensive consular assistance, and maintains constant contact with the relatives of the deceased.
