Bishkek, March 12, 2026. /Kabar/. On March 11, special high-level event was held in Vienna as part of the 69th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs. It was titled "The UN and the SCO: Developing Regional and National Early Warning Systems for the Emergence of New Synthetic Drugs and New Psychoactive Substances."
According to the Kyrgyz Republic's drug control service, the event was organized by the SCO Secretariat and UNODC at the initiative of Kyrgyzstan as part of its chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2026.
During the discussion, participants noted that the rapid emergence and spread of new synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances poses serious challenges to the international drug control system and requires the development of modern response mechanisms. Particular attention was paid to the development of national and regional early warning mechanisms that enable the timely identification of new substances, analysis of associated risks, and the prompt adoption of preventive and law enforcement measures.
The importance of expanding international cooperation, sharing analytical information, and coordinating the efforts of states and international organizations to increase the effectiveness of countering the illicit trafficking of synthetic drugs was also emphasized.
