Bishkek, Dec. 10, 2025. /Kabar/. Hydropower has historically been the foundation of the energy system in the Kyrgyz Republic, said Deputy Energy Minister Emilbek Ysmanov at the international conference "Water, Mountains, and Glaciers of the Kyrgyz Republic: A Sustainable Future."

According to him, approximately 90% of electricity is generated by hydroelectric power plants.

"However, the actual planned utilization of hydroelectric potential represents a small percentage. This depends on water inflow, the volume of snow and glaciers, the stability of the snow cover, and low water levels," he said.

According to the deputy minister, water inflows have been declining in recent years. This is due to changing precipitation patterns, decreasing snow levels, and changing runoff patterns.

"Under such conditions, energy supply becomes vulnerable, especially when demand for electricity increases. This is not just an energy issue; it is a question of the sustainability of the life support system for citizens, businesses, and the social and economic stability of our country," he stated. Ysmanov emphasized that Kyrgyzstan possesses a wealth of three-dimensional resources—mountains, glaciers, and rivers.

"This is both our advantage and our responsibility. Today's conference is not just a symbolic forum; it's an opportunity to lay the foundation for a new sustainable approach. When water, mountains, and rivers are viewed not as resources, but as major strategic assets," the deputy minister added.
