International school on glacier research opens in Naryn

Bishkek, June 24.06.26. /Kabar/. Today, the official opening ceremony of the International Summer School “Glacier Research, Conservation and Adaptation to Climate Change” (IPROMO) was held in Naryn.

The event is being held as part of the promotion of Kyrgyzstan's mountain agenda, the development of international cooperation in the field of climate change and glacier conservation, as well as the implementation of the five-year plan for the development of mountain regions for 2023-2027. The summer courses will continue until July 7 of this year.

The Summer School is organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat in cooperation with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the University of Central Asia, with the support of the Special Presidential Representative on the Mountain Agenda and FAO.

The IPROMO International Summer School will contribute to strengthening the scientific and expert potential of the region, developing professional contacts between specialists from Central Asian countries, as well as promoting joint initiatives on glacier conservation and sustainable development of mountain ecosystems.

The educational program includes lectures, practical classes, field research and group projects. Special attention will be paid to strengthening regional cooperation between Central Asian countries during the Summer School.

In her speech, the Special Presidential Representative for the Mountain Agenda, Dinara Kemelova, noted the five-year anniversary of the Mountain Regions Development Action Plan (2023–2027) and emphasized the importance of monitoring and preserving glaciers as a strategic resource for the sustainable development of mountainous countries and regions. She also provided information on the promotion of the Mountain Agenda in the framework of international climate negotiations and Kyrgyzstan’s international initiatives for sustainable mountain development.

The summer school is attended by representatives from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, as well as Christopher Gerry, Rector of the University of Central Asia, Oleg Guchgeldiev, FAO Representative, and Dmitry Prudskikh, OSCE Representative. Leading experts and scientists from Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, India and other countries will act as lecturers.
