Bishkek, May 15, 2026 /Kabar/. On May 14, Jogorku Kenesh held a meeting of the Council on Sustainable Development on climate change, chaired by Speaker Marlen Mamataliyev. The meeting was attended by members of Jogorku Kenesh, representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers, heads of international organizations, and leading experts.
According to Kyrgyz Parliament, the main topic of the agenda was the implementation of a set of measures to ensure the country's environmental and biological security and preserve the Issyk-Kul ecosystem. One of the key areas of discussion was the implementation of the Law on Biological Security. The Council's decision recommended that the Cabinet of Ministers designate a single authorized body responsible for coordinating the law's implementation and implement a system of interdepartmental monitoring of biological risks. Particular attention was paid to the development of electric charging station infrastructure throughout the republic as an important element in the transition to "green" mobility and ensuring the country's sustainable development.
Meeting participants also discussed the preservation of the Issyk-Kul ecosystem. Particular emphasis was placed on the issue of "Preservation of the Issyk-Kul Ecosystem through Legal Means," initiated by the relevant Working Group. Following the discussion, the Cabinet of Ministers was asked to conduct a comprehensive inventory of regulatory acts governing the activities of the region's research and infrastructure facilities, ensure the restoration of the state groundwater monitoring system and the rehabilitation of the monitoring well network, and develop mechanisms for implementing digital standards for environmental data collection to ensure scientifically sound management decision-making.
Furthermore, the Council considered prospects for legislative regulation of the Geoparks network as a tool for climate resilience and sustainable regional development. It was recommended to develop a legal framework for the recognition of Geoparks within the UNESCO system, which would create favorable conditions for attracting investment and developing ecotourism. Following the meeting, the Council forwarded its decision to the Cabinet of Ministers for further consideration and implementation.
