Kyrgyzstan and Bhutan discuss advancing Global Mountain Agenda

Bishkek, April 22, 2026 /Kabar/. The Kingdom of Bhutan is hosting the Second Interregional Working Session "Mountains Connect" on April 20–22, aimed at developing cooperation in the sustainable development of mountain regions, the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

Representatives from more than 25 countries, including the regions of the Alps, Andes, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Carpathians, East Africa, and the Hindu Kush-Himalayas, are participating in the event. The discussions focused on climate change adaptation, improving governance mechanisms, resource mobilization, and strengthening the science-policy interface.

Dinara Kemelova, Special Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic on the Mountain Agenda, is participating in the session.

On April 21, Dinara Kemelova met with Tsering Tobgay, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan. During the meeting, the Special Representative conveyed to Tsering Tobgay a message from Sadyr Zhaparov, reaffirming interest in developing bilateral and multilateral cooperation and inviting him to participate in the second Global Mountain Summit "Bishkek+25."

The prime minister of Bhutan noted the significant contribution of the President of Kyrgyzstan to advancing the mountain agenda internationally and expressed appreciation for the ongoing work in this area. The parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to protecting vulnerable mountain ecosystems and supporting the populations of mountain regions.

Negotiations were also held with Loenpo Dhungyel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bhutan. The constructive dynamics of interaction within the UN, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and other international forums were noted, as well as the similarity of approaches and alignment of priorities between the two countries.

During a meeting with Bhutan's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Gem Tsering, prospects for cooperation in hydropower, mountain ecosystem conservation, including snow leopard protection, and measures to reduce the vulnerability of mountain communities to the impacts of climate change were discussed.

Bhutan expressed interest in participating in the second Global Mountain Summit "Bishkek+25."
