As part of the meeting of the Council on Trade in Services of the World Trade Organization, the Kyrgyz Republic and India put forward an initiative to hold a separate session at the WTO platform to exchange experience and information on the topic of "Promoting the recognition of professional qualifications," the press service of the Ministry of Economy said.
As stated in the joint communication of the two countries, issues for discussion, in particular, may include the development and impact of promoting the recognition of professional qualifications on trade, problems associated with this process, such as lack of information or transparency, as well as convergence of policy and regulation. In addition, it is planned to study options for expanding the participation of developing countries in mutual recognition agreements, consider the relevant work of international organizations and initiatives, analyze domestic regulatory practices, bilateral or regional agreements, the relevance of GATS provisions and the possibilities of using the WTO framework to promote the recognition of professional qualifications. The communication also notes that the proposed session will provide member countries with an opportunity to assess current trends and developments in this area, as well as benefit from the experiences and best practices of other participants.
During the meeting, the head of the mission Nurbek Maksutov in his speech noted that the difficulties that specialists from developing countries face in obtaining recognition of their professional qualifications abroad limit their business opportunities and negatively affect the competitive advantages of these countries. Otherwise, thanks to the availability of highly qualified specialists, developing countries could strengthen their positions in the field of professional services. In this regard, he emphasized the importance of holding this session.
"Promoting the recognition of professional qualifications can play a huge role in expanding the participation of developing countries in global trade in professional services and trade in services in general," the head of the mission said.
