Kyrgyzstan breaks world record, quota of women in Parliament reaches 31

Bishkek, March 19, 2026. /Kabar/. The number of female deputies in the Jogorku Kenesh has reached 31, breaking a world record. This was announced by the Speaker of the Parliament, Marlen Mamataliev, at general meeting.

She noted that recently, the United Nations, based on the data of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, announced that Kyrgyzstan ranks first in the world in terms of the number of women in parliament.

According to Mamataliev, special importance is attached to the quota of women in committees and international parliamentary groups.

“Yesterday, we broke the record with 31 female deputies. The 30% quota for women is maintained in the Presidium. Yesterday, the rotation of committee chairmen was completed. For the first time in history, the 30% quota was maintained, and women were elected committee chairwoman. There are also female deputies among the deputies. There are international deputy friendship groups. There, too, for the first time in history, women have entered the leadership of groups. Kyrgyz people always respect women, may our women always be respected,” the chairman said.

It is worth noting that, according to a new report by the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Union, Kyrgyzstan was named the world leader in the number of female deputies in parliament.

It was reported that the largest increase in women in parliament last year was recorded in Kyrgyzstan. The share of women in Jogorku Kenesh increased by 12.9%.

Currently, 31 out of 90 deputies in parliament are women. The law stipulates that one out of three seats in a multi-seat constituency will be given to a female candidate.
