Bishkek, Feb. 5, 2026 /Kabar/. At the Global Summit on Sustainable Development Goals, Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, proposed increasing attention to mountain regions in the international climate agenda, the Cabinet of Ministers reported.

He noted that mountain ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to climate change. Melting glaciers, changing precipitation patterns, and increased extreme weather events pose long-term risks to water resources, agriculture, and energy both in Central Asia and beyond.

Kyrgyzstan called for mountainous countries and regions to be considered special zones for sustainable development, ensuring they have priority access to climate finance, adaptation technologies, and monitoring systems.

According to Bakyt Torobaev, the sustainability of mountainous regions directly impacts the water and food security of millions of people, requiring systemic and coordinated international solutions.
