Bishkek, March 17, 2026. /Kabar/. It's no secret that electricity consumption in Kyrgyzstan is growing every year. The energy deficit is covered by imports from neighboring republics. According to the Ministry of Energy, electricity consumption in 2025 was 19.3 billion kWh. 15.4 billion kWh were generated domestically, with the remaining 3.8 billion kWh imported.
Hydropower is the backbone of the country's energy sector, which depends on water levels, especially in winter. Therefore, shortages occur in winter, forcing electricity imports. Furthermore, the infrastructure is outdated, but the country has great potential for developing hydroelectric and green energy.
Emilbek Orozbaev, Director of the Green Energy Fund, spoke about the launch of large-capacity solar power plants.
According to the fund's director, Kyrgyzstan is actively planning to commission a number of solar power plant projects in 2026, aimed at developing green energy and increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the country's energy mix.
In At-Tatyr village, Batken district, investor Ak-Tatyr Energo LLC is implementing a 600 MW solar power plant project. The land plot covers 1,232 hectares. The first phase, with a capacity of 200 MW, is scheduled to be commissioned by September 2026.
In Kyzyl-Oruk village, Toru-Aygyr-Tamchy, Issyk-Kul district, Retsa LLC is building a solar power plant with a total capacity of 1,900 MW. The first phase, with a capacity of 150 MW, will be launched in April 2026.
Another project in Toru-Aygyr village is being implemented by Bishkek-Solar LLC. The plant, with a total capacity of 300 MW, is scheduled to launch its first 100 MW phase in August 2026.
The commissioning of the new plants will also create opportunities for the development of green tourism and the renewable energy industry, attract investment, and introduce modern technologies into Kyrgyzstan's energy sector.
