Bishkek, June 30, 2026. /Kabar/. Kyrgyzstan has toughened penalties for drunk driving: offenders now face a fine of 80,000 soms and a two-year license revocation. Baikazy Aitikul uulu, a lawyer with the main directorate of road safety of Ministry of Internal Affairs told Kabar.

According to him, previous penalties were ineffective, resulting legislative changes.

"Until 2023, driving under the influence of alcohol was punishable by a fine of 17,500 soms. From 2023 until recently, a one-year license suspension was imposed. However, this measure did not have the desired deterrent effect on violators, so new amendments and additions were made," the lawyer explained.

Measures are also being introduced for drivers who refuse to undergo a medical examination for intoxication. Previously, this violation was punishable by a three-day arrest; today, a fine of 100,000 soms and a three-year driver's license suspension are imposed.

Furthermore, a fine of 20,000 soms is imposed for intentionally handing over a vehicle to an intoxicated person who does not have a driver's license: for individuals, it is 55,000 soms.
