Large-scale clean water and irrigation projects being implemented in Issyk-Kul region

Bishkek, Nov. 24, 2025. /Kabar/. In the Issyk-Kul region, with the support of partners, measures to improve clean and wastewater systems are being actively implemented, Bakyt Torobaev, Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, at the commissioning ceremony of a new clean water intake facility in Kyzyl-Suu village of Jeti-Oguz region.

According to the ministry, the minister emphasized that work to improve clean and wastewater systems in the Issyk-Kul region is being carried out actively and consistently.

Torobaev listed the projects currently underway in this area:

  • As part of World Bank project, 15 villages have been provided with clean water, and work is nearing completion in two more villages;
  • New $200 million World Bank and partner project includes 15 villages in Ak-Suu regions, for which cost estimates are being developed;
  • Kuwait Fund allocates $1 million feasibility studies which have begun for 20 villages in the region. Three-four villages have been included in the 2025 list through the republican budget. Construction is underway in four of these villages, and the design stage is underway in 30 villages.
  • With the assistance of the EBRD €22 million project, water supply systems have been built and commissioned in the cities of Karakol, Balykchy, and Cholpon-Ata.
  • Under the Asian Development Bank's $107 million waste water project, work has been fully completed in Balykchy, and construction is ongoing in Karakol and Cholpon-Ata.

Regarding irrigation, the minister reported the following:

In Ak-Suu, Issyk-Kul, and Tyup regions, the design and construction of reservoirs is underway: the GKO-Sigma, Shaty, Pobeda, Kumbel, and Toru-Aygyr with total capacity of 512,000 cubic meters (40-80% complete);

110.9 km of canals are being reconstructed and 38.7 km modernized, which will allow 945 hectares of new irrigated land to use and improve water supply to 81,136 hectares;

Using innovative technology, canal beds are being concreted – 27,000 square meters in Zharkymbaev village and 4,500 square meters in Kol-Tor village. He added that over 336 million soms have been allocated for irrigation, and the facilities will be commissioned in 2025-2026.
