Around 7,000 families in Afghanistan will gain access to electricity under a new project connecting local settlements to Turkmenistan’s power grid, Fergana news agency reported.

The initiative includes the electrification of 21 villages in the Sang-Atash district of Badghis province. The total cost of the project is estimated at $2 million. Upon completion of technical works, thousands of households are expected to receive a stable power supply.

All settlements included in the program are scheduled to be connected to Turkmenistan’s energy network within the next five months.

Technical works on Afghan territory are being carried out by Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), the country’s national power utility. At the end of last year, DABS head Abdul Bari Omar also announced progress on another major initiative implemented jointly with Turkmen energy specialists — the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan (TAP) power transmission line project.

In December, the route map for the TAP project was finalized, and DABS planned to submit it to Ashgabat.

Turkmen government representatives have reiterated their readiness to expand energy cooperation with neighboring countries, noting that both the TAP power line and the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) gas pipeline are strategically important for regional energy integration and the economic interests of both Ashgabat and Kabul.
