The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that five of the eight reported cases from the cruise ship MV Hondius are infections caused by hantavirus Xinhua reports.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated at a press conference that the remaining three are suspected cases.
He noted that more cases could emerge due to the incubation period of the Andes virus, a hantavirus strain found in South America. However, WHO currently assesses the public risk as low.
As written before, WHO warns of possible human-to-human transmission of hantavirus on cruise ship.
