Bishkek, June 16, 2026 /Kabar/. Bishkek marks the completion of the second phase of the "Rehabilitation of Water Supply and Sewerage Systems in Bishkek" project -Orto-Alysh water intake facility, supported by Swiss Confederation and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The event was attended by Bishkek Mayor Aibek Dzhunushaliev, EBRD Regional Director Aiten Rustemova, and the Ambassador of Switzerland to Kyrgyzstan, Sirocco Messerli.
The total investment in the project amounted to €16 million, of which €8 million was provided as a loan and €8 million as a grant.
As part of the second phase of the project, 35 new wells were drilled and commissioned at the Orto-Alysh water intake, a 3.2-kilometer main water pipeline was built, and an 11-kilometer sewer collector was completed. Modern laboratory equipment was supplied to improve the quality of drinking and wastewater monitoring. 108 units of equipment and 4 units of specialized machinery were also purchased for the Bishkekvodokanal municipal enterprise.
Efficient project management resulted in savings of €3.6 million in grant funds, which were used to develop the utility infrastructure in the southern part of the capital. As a result, an additional 2.6 km of water supply and 4.9 km of sewer networks were built.
The project was completed in May 2025. The funding utilization rate was over 98% of the total budget.
Aibek Dzhunushaliev noted that in 2022–2023, the capital faced serious challenges in providing the population with drinking water, but the measures implemented significantly improved the reliability of the water supply system.
