Bishkek mayor outlines measures to reduce smog

Bishkek, Oct. 14, 2026 /Kabar/. To reduce air pollution levels in Bishkek, authorities are inspecting coal quality, upgrading public transport, modernizing filtration systems at the Thermal Power Plant (TPP), and increasing waste disposal capacity. The capital's mayor, Aibek Dzhunushaliev told at Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) session.

According to the mayor, there are 33 coal sales points operating in the city. Specialists inspect the coal's quality, including compliance with established size requirements, specifically, a minimum size of 13 mm.

Vehicles are a major source of air pollution. To mitigate their environmental impact, 1,447 gas-powered buses and 120 electric buses have been put into service in Bishkek.

Additionally, electrostatic precipitators at the Bishkek TPP undergo annual repair and refurbishment. Last year, a desulfurization system designed to reduce emissions was implemented at the plant for the first time.

Special attention is also being paid to household waste disposal. While the facility has a design capacity of 1,000 tons per day, Bishkek generates between 1,400 and 1,600 tons of waste daily. Currently, 1,200 tons of waste are processed daily, generating electricity in the process.

A contract worth approximately 230 million soms was signed this year to increase the facility's capacity to 2,000 tons per day. According to the mayor, about 400 tons of waste currently remain unprocessed. Expanding capacity will make it possible to process both accumulated refuse and daily-generated waste. To date, over 330,000 tons have been disposed of.

In addition, more than 50% of new residential areas in the capital have been connected to the gas supply network.
