Bishkek, March 5, 2026. /Kabar/. The regional conference, "Education for Peace and Security," dedicated to the International Day of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education, is taking place in Bishkek today.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic with the assistance of the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek and the International Committee of the Red Cross in Central Asia.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Foreign Minister Asein Isaev noted that since the founding of the United Nations, disarmament and arms control issues have played a vital role in preventing and resolving crises and armed conflicts.
According to him, Kyrgyzstan has consistently pursued a policy of peace and disarmament since the first days of independence. Specifically, work was undertaken jointly with the Central Asian states to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone. This initiative became the first such zone in the Northern Hemisphere and the first multilateral security agreement encompassing all five countries of the region.
Deputy foreign minister emphasized that the Central Asian states have voluntarily committed not to produce, acquire, or deploy nuclear weapons on their territory.
It was also noted that Kyrgyzstan consistently promotes non-proliferation initiatives. "In particular, the country joined the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, reaffirming its commitment to global disarmament efforts," Isaev said.
Asein Isaev recalled that in 2022, the UN General Assembly unanimously supported Kyrgyzstan's initiative to proclaim March 5 as the International Day of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness.
According to him, events are held annually to mark this day in various international centers, including Vienna, Geneva, and New York, with the participation of governments, civil society representatives, youth, and academics.
He also noted that education and awareness remain important tools for strengthening peace and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
